What is the Swivel Public Safety mobile app?

Swivel is a free mobile app that delivers real‑time public safety alerts from public safety providers and key community stakeholders, based on your phone’s location and your settings.

Yes, the Swivel app is completely free and contains no advertising.

Swivel is available for both iOS (at the App Store) and Android (at Google Play Store) phones.

Alerts & Notifications

How does Swivel know which alerts to send me?

Alerts are sent based on:

  • your phone’s location
  • any Addresses of Interest you add
  • any Spaces you select from the Public Directory
  • any Private Codes you add

Yes. You can adjust your notification radius (The wider the radius, the more alerts you may receive.)

Yes. You can turn on or off Push Alerts for specific incident categories in the Swivel app

(Note that some alert categories are always enabled by default for safety reasons.)

Alert radius determines the area that will be considered for the alerts sent to your phone. Consider it as your sphere of awareness. You can set an alert radius for your phone, as well as for each location in your My Spaces settings.

You can choose from several distance settings within the following ranges:

  • Canada: 0.5 km to 25 km
  • U.S.: 0.25 mile to 16 miles

My Spaces

What are My Spaces?

My Spaces are locations or groups that you add or select in settings. You will receive alerts relevant to your My Spaces.

  • Addresses of Interest let you receive alerts near locations you care about (such as home, parents, daycare, etc.), even when you’re not there.
  • Public Directory provides a list of participating organizations and locations. This list is updated on an ongoing basis.
  • Private Codes are groups and require an eight‑letter access code provided by an organization, such as work, condo or office building.

No. There is no limit, and there are no user fees.

Yes. However, in order to receive alerts, the location must be within a jurisdiction that uses Swivel.

Language & Accessibility

Can I change the language for alerts?

Yes. You can select from over 70 languages for alert translation.

Help & Safety

Can I contact police or emergency services from the app?

Yes. The app includes police resource screens with links for emergency and non‑emergency contacts, as well as online reporting and community resources.

Yes. Some screens have a pop-up info window with instructions for that screen.
